Hi Mike,
If you visited your site for the first time with no preconceived ideas about the business, what would you think? Does your site show up to that initial contact in a suit and tie, or is it wearing cut offs and a Metallica t-shirt? Things that seem insignificant when you already KNOW you have a great business can give a new visitor another message altogether. If your site looks third rate in even the smallest way, your potential customers will assume your product or service is also third rate, which is not the impression you are trying to make. The overall look and functionality of your site is the first impression that many people will have of your business. Make sure it's a good one.
Here are some of the common ways your website can look unprofessional:
- Missing pictures: If you post pictures, make sure they load. Big empty squares look awful, and will drive away visitors with just a glance.
- Broken links: Yes, your link looks like it's there. Then someone clicks on it and goes nowhere. One irritated visitor leaves your page for real, and that's a potential customer you just lost.
- Things don't line up: In the sidebars or on the main content sections, things need to line up in some way. If your site just looks like pile of text and images stacked willy-nilly, it's going to repel visitors.
- Inconsistency: There should be a consistency to your site. Pages should have some similarity of layout and color scheme with one another. When they all look different, it annoys and disorients visitors, who are more prone to not take the actions you want them to take.
- Misspellings: The tiny killer of the professional look. Sometimes only one misspelling will do it, and it might just be a letter or two out of place. If your page is littered with them, you will lose a lot of visitors quickly.
- Writing over images: Writing over images makes the text hard to read, and many people find it irritating to boot.
Your site doesn't have to be high-budget or complex with plenty of bells and whistles to look professional. It just has to be ordered, consistent, and error-free. A plain, easy to navigate website is always better than a great looking website that is confusing and doesn't work properly.
All the best,
