Getting Traffic From Social Media Marketing

Hi Mike,

Twitter and Facebook are all the rage these days. Would you like to use web 2.0 sites like Twitter and Facebook in your marketing, but you don't know how?  There's no way to teach everything there is to know about how to get traffic from social media marketing (web2.0 marketing) in one email, but I can help you get started.

First you need to come up with a plan by answering a few simple questions:

  1. What are three things you hope to accomplish through social media?  Examples might include better communication with clients, gain new clients, etc.

   2.   What social media tactics are you already using?

   3.  Where does your target audience spend their time?

   4.  Do they use web 2.0 sites at all?

   5.  What does your target market do on social media sites?

Once you answer these questions, you'll have a better idea of how (or even IF) your company can benefit from social marketing.

Leveraging Social Bookmarking Sites

One way your company can improve its online presence is through social bookmarking sites. Social bookmarking sites are sites where people post articles that are voted on by other users of the site.  Two of the most well known players in the social bookmarking arena are Digg.com and Delicious.com. The social bookmarking site that brings the most traffic to my sites is Stumbleupon. Stumbleupon is easy to use and once you start getting stumbleupon friends to vote for your articles you will start seeing a steady stream of new traffic from the site.

Leveraging Social Media Sites Like Facebook, and Twitter

Facebook and Twitter are being used by businesses to communicate with their market and to expand their market share.

Facebook Marketing

On Facebook, companies set up what is known as a "fan page" that contains information about the company. The fan page keeps customers informed of latest sales, news, etc. about the company. Companies also use facebook fan pages to get feedback from customers and potential customers and to give away free stuff to help gain more customers. Here are the steps to setup a fan page:

2. Begin building your page by clicking "edit page"

3. Upload a profile picture. This will be the thumbnail picture that appears in the user's fan box

4. Edit the Information fields. Text in these boxes will help people find your fan page when they search. More importantly, it will also be at the top of the page and provide users with a quick glance about the brand or product.

5. Upload videos and/or photos to get the conversation started. This will also make the page more interesting. and on other pages, such as search results.

6. Create a few wall posts or discussion topics to help get conversations started.

7. If you want to you can set up a discussion board and add other apps to your fan page.

8. Promote your fan page using your favorite promotion techniques.

For an example of a fan page, see the basic fan page I set up for our website: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mantyweb-Designs/135146992341

Twitter

Twitter is best described as a micro blogging platform.  You are limited to 140 characters each time you do an update, which initially, may seem a small amount.  However, as you become more experienced, you will get used to it.

That said, Twitter is much, much more than that.  It is like one huge global chat room, but then again, it doesn't have to be.  It all depends on how many people you follow on Twitter.  If it's in the thousands, then your "Tweetstream" will be running fast and furious with everything that's coming in.  If you are only following a few hundred, or even less, then things are much easier to keep up with.

Twitter is also a great way to meet new people online, particularly those with similar interests to you. You can use it to network and find new clients for your business.

One of the other ways companies are using Twitter is by setting up twitter accounts that help customers stay up to speed with their business. For instance, restaurants are "tweeting" their daily specials and special discounts on twitter.

The Bottom Line

These are only a couple of the ways you can use social media to promote your business.  Using social media can be an excellent way to promote your business, but it does require some time to gather the knowledge to come up with a plan and to implement it.  If you would rather leave the job to someone else, please be sure to contact us and ask how we can help your company take the social media plunge.

All the best,
