Mistake 7 - No Proof

Hi Mike,

 

The Internet is a wonderful place, but along with all the great services and products you can find, there's plenty of garbage and scams. Because of this, people shopping online can be hard to convince. Most shoppers want to make sure they're going to get value for their money, so people want some proof your product or service works before they buy.  Unlike a brick and mortar store, they can't pick up an item and look at it.  They can't even tell whether you really have merchandise to sell, or whether you're simply going to take their money and disappear.  Just like a wedding photographer without a portfolio of previous work, you're going to have a hard time selling anything if you don't provide proof.

 

Fortunately, it's easy to provide proof. In fact, there are two good ways to go:

1. Testimonials: Most sites selling something have plenty of testimonials. On the Internet, they take the form of customer quotes in boxes that make them easy to find. In fact, the more testimonials there are, the bigger the price tag tends to be. Whether you're marketing a product or service, get as many of these as you can.

2. Examples: There are many ways to show examples of your previous work. You can post samples if they can be digitally converted, or make videos demonstrating your product or service similar to the commercials of the late, great Billy Mays. If you think your product or service can sell itself by example, use examples.
   

 

In either case, make sure your proof can be found. Put the proof on your sales page and and everywhere else on your website to make your customer believe your products and/or services are valuable. You're not going to convince the buying public, otherwise.

Mistake 6 - Your Web Site Misrepresents What Your Business Is and Does

Hi Mike,

 

Here's a really frustrating way your web site can cost you money: It gives you a customer you can't serve.

 

A customer likes your site. They like your work. So they get in touch with you and ask if how much it will cost for you to do something that you can't or don't do. The reason this happened is because your site misrepresented your business, and now a potential customer is willing to pay you money for something you can't or don't do. That's business you get to watch walk away after explaining to someone that you don't do what they thought you did.  For example, if you are a real estate buyer's agent, you want to make sure that people understand if you don't take listings.  If you're a patent lawyer, you don't want people calling you to file suit against their neighbor with the noisy dog.

 

If you're selling something, this could result in a refund request, or in the extreme, a legal action taken against you. That's a sale you've just made and then unmade. This can also leave an unhappy customer telling everyone they know how much your product isn't what you said it was, which is negative advertising you don't need.

 

Now, not all misrepresentations are deliberate. You can misrepresent your product or service accidentally, or just lay down the sales pitch a bit too thick. In any case, it won't serve you to do this, so double check your site (or have it double-checked) to insure that you're not inadvertently telling someone who's never seen it before something about your business that isn't true.

Mistake 5 - Difficult Purchasing Process

Hi Mike,

 

As frustrating as it may be, you can still lose a customer even after they've decided they want to buy from you. You can lose them during the purchasing phase of the sale. If your purchasing process is difficult or makes them jump through hoops the chance you'll lose that sale is that much greater.

 

Some of the big culprits in losing sales during the purchasing process:

1. Difficult navigation: To buy something from you, first someone has to find it. Then, they have to pay for it. If you're only selling one thing, this process should be linear (first you do this, then you do that, then you get the product). On a shopping mall site, getting around, getting to and from the shopping cart, and through the final purchase process should be intuitive and frustration- free. Otherwise, your potential customer can very easily find their way off of your site.
2. Making someone register to buy from you: Yes, it's done by other companies, but it's still very annoying. If someone has to have an account with you to buy from you, and they don't want to go through the trouble of making one, that's a sale you've just lost. If you can absolutely avoid it, don't make someone register with your site to buy from you.  It's okay to give them the option and even an incentive, but give them an alternative that doesn't require registering.
   
3. Malfunctioning or substandard shopping cart scripts: If you want to sell more than one thing on a single site, like a shopping mall site, you'll need a form of automation called ashopping cart scriptto accomplish that. Basically, the script acts like the shopping cart at the grocery store, holding your purchases until you're ready to check out.  Most people have seen an example of one when shopping with an online retailer. Just like the wobbly wheel cart at the supermarket, a shopping cart script that doesn't work correctly or has confusing navigation will frustrate your visitors, sometimes costing you a sale now and almost certainly costing you a returning customer.
4. Nonstandard Payment: People shopping online want to pay with credit cards most of the time. You'll be able to take orders with something simple, like a PayPal account. So don't give your customers a hard time by only accepting very odd types of payment, or offline types of payment (like checks) only.
   

 

This error is not hard to understand and easy to avoid. If someone wants to buy from you, make it easy for them to give you their money. Period.

Mistake 4 - Your Online Marketing is Targeting the Wrong Visitors

A quick point about web traffic: Traffic doesn't spend money, targeted traffic does.  I've already mentioned this briefly under the search engine optimization section.  To get traffic that will spend money on your site, you have to target potential visitors that are relevant to your site. Not only are they the kinds of people looking specifically for you or for your service, but they need to be people in your service area. There's no worth to getting a warm body to your site who wants your product or service but lives so far away that you can't get convert them into a paying customer.

 

In many ways, website traffic functions the same as any other marketing target.  If you're selling medical equipment, it's pointless to buy advertising in Cosmopolitan.  Yes, lots of people will see your ad, but how many of them are going to contact you and make a purchase?  Another example familiar to most people is the Yellow Pages.  If you are a doctor in Houston, you probably don't want a listing in Dallas.

 

To do online marketing correctly:

1. Narrow targeting works best: Yes, you want people, but you don't want all people. All people don't spend money on your business. People interested in your product or service spend money on your business. So using forms of advertising that target all people online is a waste of time and money. Make your ads as target-specific as you can.  If you're selling plants, don't target nursery or you may get a lot of traffic looking for baby beds.
   
2. Local business, local advertising: If your service area is only in one specific city or region, don't advertise outside of it. You'll be paying money to get customers you can't serve, which is a waste.  Someone in Chicago is not going to hire your business for their plumbing needs, no matter how great a plumber you are.
3. Don't use generic traffic generation services: These services tend to advertise as things such as "10,000 hits for $10" or "top search engine rankings for $50/month" or some other "too good to be true" offer. Don't waste your time and money (even if it is only $10).  Even if they bring you traffic (which is unlikely), these types of services aren't targeted to your location or your type of business.  These ads are the equivalent of ads that promise you that you can make thousands of dollars a month processing mail from home.  There's always a catch.

 

Yes, a lot of people are online, but you have to sort the ones who need your services from those who don't. Furthermore, you have to sort the ones whom you can serve from those you can't. Fail to do either of these, and you're wasting time and money.

Mistake 3 - No Call to Action

Hi Mike,

 

What do you want people to do when they visit your site?  You may want to make a sale. You may want to generate a lead for your offline business. You may want to gain a subscriber to your newsletter. Regardless of what kind of business you own, you need to have a clear call to action.

 

A call to action is basically you telling your customer "do this now". You don't want them to "think about it" because people have a tendency to "think about it" forever. You've gone through a lot of trouble and expense getting potential customers to your site, but traffic alone doesn't pay the bills.  You need to transform those "potential customers" into paying clients.  There's a reason car dealers want you to take that test drive and why, once you have, they don't want you to leave the lot to "talk it over".  They know you won't be back.  Now, your call to action doesn't have to be the stereotypical "used car salesman" pushy, but it does need to be there.

 

There are any number of ways you can make a call to action. The specific types are would take too long to list her but may be the topic of a future newsletter, but a call to action must be there. Test your way through different approaches to them until you get one that works for your clientele.
